A few weeks back, we had the chance to check out the Dobell House in Wangi, NSW. Born in Newcastle in 1899, Sir William Dobell was a prominent artist throughout the early half of the 20th century winning numerous highly regarded fine art prizes, such as the Wynne Prize and the Archibald thrice, the first of which is immortalised in the Australian art world for his winning portrait of Joshua Smith, which ended up in a court case claiming it was caricature, therefore not a portrait in many artist terms. The painting won the case, proving it was a portrait but the affect of the case took a toll on Dobell where he retreated to Wangi and excluded himself from the art world for many years until winning his second Archibald prize in 1948 for his portrait of his close friend, and fellow artist, Margaret Olley.
He remained in Wangi up until his passing in 1970.
The studio is still in tact, relatively as he left it, with his brushes and palette, furniture and views all accessible to the public. It’s mindblowing to be able to walk and venture around anybodies studio, let alone an artist as influential to art as Sir William Dobell.
Here’s a mixtape we made to get you through this winding week and into the summer holidays vibe. Yeaaah!
Newcastle will be one of the lucky cities in Australia to be able to check out the documentary Sign Painters direct from the US. Our good friend Brett Piva from Pocket Design, in conjunction with a bunch of top sponsors, has been the man behind the scenes making this all happen. It’s screening at the amazing Newcastle Museum on the 28th of Nov (tonight!) so if you’re a novacastrian, or live in close proximity, check it out.
See what you’re in for at the films official Sign Painters site!
"The Sign Painters Movie, directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon is an 80 minute documentary movie about the dedicated practitioners, their time-honoured methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States."

Hi all! Here’s our Spring/Summer 2013 collection. We’ve spent some time over the last 6-12 months setting up our studio, equipping ourselves with a new printing carousel and exposure unit. So we’re very happy to show you all some of the fruits of our labor. All the artwork, silkscreens, and printing, aswell as packaging has all been done in-house by HORSELOVE.
Also, we’re happy to introduce art prints to our website, which is a nice new and exciting addition to HORSELOVE. We’re looking forward to working with other artists in all fields, so if this is you, keep an eye out for HL news or give us a shout out and introduce yourself.
Remember, because of all the reasons stated above, our stock is limited editions so first-in-best-dressed. Literally! Best dressed. Depending on the rest of your attire.
We hope you all like the new collection and catch you at some of the upcoming markets we’ll be at.
Keep it weird!
